In First Class, We are Space Superstars!

In First Class, we know have learned lots about space. In fact, we even learned a mnemonic to help us remember all the names of the planets! Look at some of the things we did down below, see if you can spot any First Class Astronauts!

Papier Mache Planets

We covered small balloons with newspaper and PVA glue. We had to put lots and lots of layers of paper on the balloons. When they dried, we decorated them to look like either the sun, the earth or the moon.

Passports and Procedures

We wrote procedures about how to make papier mache planets. We also made Inter Galactic Space passports. We added these to our space display with our solar system art. If you look closely, you some astronauts  in our class spaceship, or maybe even floating out in space!

Kickboxing Caradh Puts Us Through Our Paces

In February, champion kickboxer, Caradh O' Donovan, came to put us through our paces with some circuit training. We practiced the four exercises in the week leading up to the circuits. We learned how to do push-ups, jumping jacks, mountain climbers and spotty dogs. We had to do each exercise for 2 minutes, before having a break and moving onto the next exercise. It was very tiring but we enjoyed it, and Caradh cheered us on the whole time.

Paired Reading

During Friendship Week, we did paired reading with third class. The girls from third class came to our classroom and read lots of books for us, they even helped us do some reading too. We had a great time and made lots of new friends in third class!

Sweet Skewers!

In February we made sweet skewers using fruit, chocolate and marshmallows. After we ate our delicious treats, we discussed the steps we took to assemble them, and wrote a procedure based on our experience!

Sinking and Floating

In January we investigated whether different items in our classroom would sink of float based on their shape and weight. We worked with our small groups to make predictions about each item, we then took it in turns to test whether it sank or whether it floated, and recorded our results.

Up For Debate!

This week, First Class have been practicing their debating. We learned that good debators give lots of reasons for their opinions. We were debating whether or not children should get homework,we split into groups,  we took some time to make notes and then presented our argument to the rest of the class.

Quote's of the day:
"Why do you like debating?"
"I think children should get a chance to say what they want to say"
" Me too, I want to say what I think about the world.....and I want to go to Trinity!"

Autumn in Room 6

Autumn was a very busy time for all the girls in Room 6. We learned all about squirrells and hedgehogs, we went on a leaf hunt, we dressed up for Halloween and we prepared for our Céile na Samhna. After a very nice mid-term break, we are ready to get ready for more work and fun!

We're Going on a Shape Hunt.....

The girls from 1st class have been learning all about squares, circles, triangles, rectangles and semi-circles. Both classes went on a shape walk to try and find shapes in our environment. We used clip-boards and tally sheets, and after we even made a graph to show all the shapes we found!

Freaky Hair Friday!

On Friday the 29th of September we had our Freaky Hair Friday! All the girls made a special effort to wear crazy hair do's and we all looked very funky.

Counting

Counting is very important too. We practice counting forwards and backwards and play lots of counting games everyday. Click on the icon above for some ideas to try at home.

Story Time

Not only do children love listening to stories being read aloud. It is actually very important for their reading fluency to hear us read aloud. Click on the icon above to find out more about how to help your child at home.

A LOOK BACK OVER THE YEAR SO FAR..

SCHOOL TOUR

On Wednesday 21st June we went on our school tour to Go Kids Go. It was a fantastic day. Thanks to all the parents who offered their help. We had so many offers that unfortunately we couldn't bring everyone so we pulled the names out of a hat. We really appreciate all the help the parents give us!

PAIRED READING WITH 2ND CLASS

In June, The 2nd Class girls kindly offered to do some Paired Reading with us here in Senior infants. Senior Infants had a great time. A big thank you to the girls in 2nd Class. You were fantastic.

HAVING FUN IN THE SUMMER SUN

We took advantage of the summer sunshine this week. We went on an outdoor adventure. It was so much fun!

SPORTS WEEK

During Sports Week we took part in an Obstacle Course Challenge, went orienteering around the school grounds and completed 10 laps in our School Jog. It was easy-peasy to the girls in Senior Infants who said, "Let's do it again" when it all over. Well done girls!

Football with Colm

We are so lucky to have such an experienced footballer as Colm McDonald coming in to coach us. Here we practicing some of our skills.

OUR AISTEAR ROOM

We go to our Aistear Room every day. We were learning about The Hairdresser in May and At the Seaside in June. We have 6 different areas: Roleplay, Small World, Construction, Water, Sand, and Junk Art. We always have so much fun!

GARDENING

We are so lucky to have our very own garden in school. So far we have planted sunflowers and watercress. We make sure they have enough sunlight and water every day.

"Why try to explain miracles to children when you could just have them plant a garden?"

YOGA

We are doing Yoga once a week. It helps us to relax and we feel really good after it.

"Like reading, yoga allows us to go on a magical journey using our imaginations"
