Hello girls!
Believe it or not, we’re here in our last week of 6th class! I am so proud of you all for the amazing work you have done this year, and in the last few months in particular.
This week is all about celebrations, so you will have some lovely gifts to collect on Thursday (25th of June) between 11am and 12pm. These gifts may be used during our Zoom graduation on Friday (26th of June) at 1pm! I’m looking forward to seeing you and your families during our call. I’ll be sending out an email to your parents during the week with the instructions for this meeting so keep your eyes peeled!
Ms Quigg is running her final week of MasterChef this week, so get your entries in! Encourage adults at home to get involved too, there’s a special competition being run for parents and guardians, with a cookbook up for grabs. Some teachers were busy cooking and baking in the last week too, check out the teacher cookbook and give some of those recipes a try if they sound good to you!
Check back here during the week for any updates!
Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday!
Have a great week,
Ms O’Riordan :)

Hello girls!
I hope everyone had a great weekend! As we get nearer to the end of the school year, you may be thinking of the usual end of year events, like Sports Day for example. Although we can’t have our usual Sports Day, that doesn’t mean that we’re forgetting about it!
This week you can find tasks and challenges on the Active School page, with Friday being our Virtual Sports Day! On this day, you can pick your 5 favourite activities to do at home.
This active work for the week is replacing any usual written work, so make sure you participate in the activities organised by Ms O’Shaughnessy and Ms Sherwin.
Have a fantastic week and enjoy!

Graduation song 2020
Hi girls,
I've had a couple of emails suggesting a different song for your graduation. I did set up a website last week for graduation song suggestions, but I've also made a poll that you can use to vote for the final decision. The two options are 'I'll Always Remember You' by Hannah Montana and 'Count on Me' by Bruno Mars.
Take some time to listen to both before you make your choice, and don't worry about what other people are voting for. Remember that you will have to sing this song during your graduation, so think about which song you would find more comfortable to sing.
I'll be going with the song that has the most votes by this Friday at 2:30 pm, any votes after this won't be counted.
I've linked the poll below.

Lots of your work for this week and last week is aimed towards your graduation, so make sure those bits get done!

Riddle of the day 28/05/20
You measure my life in hours and I serve you by expiring. I’m quick when I’m thin and slow when I’m fat. The wind is my enemy.
Yesterday’s answer: there are 3 sons and 4 daughters in the family.
I’ve received some beautiful positive comments so far that I know these girls will be delighted to read. I was asked to share the names of every girl in our class, just to make sure that no one is forgotten. Thank you for that thoughtful suggestion!
Eili, Gabija, Katie, Louise, Carly, Ava, Abbie, Emma H., Madison, Niamh, Sarah, Abigail, Megan N., Ella, Meghan O’L, Teni, Mandy, Sandy, Alex, Shonagh, Hannah, Ema R.

Riddle of the day 27/05/20
A girl has as many brothers as sisters, but each brother has only half as many brothers as sisters. How many brothers and sisters are there in the family?
Yesterday’s answer: Your left elbow.
Yesterday’s answer: Your left elbow.
Riddle of the day 26/05/20 + Autograph books
What can you hold in your right hand but not in your left?
Yesterday’s answer: the word ‘few’. Well done Meg and Ema, both girls guessed correctly!
Usually, 6th class girls are given an autograph book at the end of the year to collect signatures from their classmates. Since you won’t be able to sign each other’s books this year, you will write a positive comment about every girl in our class, not including yourself. You can email these comments on to me and I will print them out and stick them into your autograph books. There are a lot of girls in our class, so just start with writing a positive comment about one girl per day.

Hello girls!
I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and got a chance to relax. A big congratulations to Meg O'L, who was the 6th Class winner for Ms Quigg's MasterChef competition! Your spag bol looked delicious! Well done also to Ema R, who ran the furthest distance in our class last week at 22.4 kilometres! I hope you took the weekend off to rest your legs Ema!
Riddle of the day is back this week, today's riddle is: I am a word of letters three, add two more and fewer there will be. What am I?
I understand that at the moment it might be difficult to stay on top of your schoolwork, so for that reason I've given you a smaller amount of work for this week. I hope that by giving less work I will be receiving a few more emails showing me the work that you have done for the week! I love seeing the work that you have done so please don't forget to show me what you have done.
Have a great week!

Hello girls!
I hope you all had a great weekend. I was a bit disappointed by emails for the Daily Mile club last week, we ran the distance of a marathon earlier in the year so I know that everyone is capable of running or walking at least a mile! I know some of you are self isolating and not leaving your home, would you be able to do a couple of laps of your back garden? I hope to get a few more emails this week!
I wonder if anyone has been following Ms Quigg's cooking club? I'd love to see some of the lovely meals you have cooked!
So far we've done Riddle of the Day and Think outside the Box challenges on our class page, which did you prefer? Do you have any other class challenges that you'd like us to try out? Let me know by email!
Have a great week!

Hello girls!
Welcome back after the weekend. I hope everyone got a chance to get out in the lovely weather and enjoy the sunshine!
Your work for the week is attached below, there is one new website included in this week's work. I have explained in the document how you can log on to this website, but if you have any issues just send me an email and I'll do my best to help! I never want you to have to pay for access to any of the websites we are using for work, so if you ever get a request from any of these websites for card details, please let me know and I'll find other work for you to do!
I think we'll take a break from riddles this week, and start using a different part of our brains instead. Each day this week I'll put up a picture that I'd like you to complete. You can send me on your pictures by email or on Class Dojo. There won't be a prize for this, this is just for fun.
However, the closing date for the school art competition is this Wednesday, so if you haven't sent me in your entry yet you still have time!
I hope you all have a super week!
Ms O'Riordan

Monday 27th April 2020 + Riddle of the day
Hello girls!
Happy Active Home week! This week is all about getting active and keeping our fitness levels up. This can be tricky to do when we have to stay indoors a lot, so I've included some ideas for staying active while staying home in the work for this week.
I'm really enjoying getting emails from some of you showing me your super work, I'd love to see some more this week! Class Dojo is also a good way to contact me, and could be quicker and easier than email if you'd like to give that a try!
The winner for Friday's riddle of the day was Megan N., well done Megan you can look forward to your homework pass! Today's riddle is: Where does success come before work? Email me your guesses at ms.oriordan.st.johnofgodartane@gmail.com.
I realise how difficult it is to stay home, and you might be finding it really challenging at this stage. It is completely normal to feel frustrated or overwhelmed, we all feel this way sometimes. The important thing to remember is that this is temporary. It will not last forever, so as difficult as it can be sometimes, try to find the good things in every day.
Keep up the good work, see you all soon!

Easter holidays 🐰🐣
Happy Easter holidays! Well done to everyone for making such a great effort to stay busy over the past three weeks. I know it’s not easy having to stay inside and entertain yourself, so you should be really proud of yourself for the effort you have made to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Our winner for the riddle of the day on Friday was Shonagh! Congratulations Shonagh, you will get your homework pass once we get back to school. The answer to the riddle was that the three people in the car were a grandfather, a father and a son.
I won’t be posting any schoolwork or riddle of the day for the next two weeks, but instead I will leave a list of suggested activities that you could do during the Easter holidays. Since we have so many great cooks and bakers in our class, I’m adding a few recipe ideas here that you might be interested in making. I’ve already received some pictures of beautiful baking that has been done, I would love to see some more after Easter!
Enjoy your Easter holidays, stay safe and wash your hands!
Ms O’Riordan :)

Abair Liom
I’ve had a couple of questions about how to access Abair Liom on the website www.folensonline.ie. I’ve made a video of how to find the story for this week and will post it here. If anyone has any trouble registering to use this website, please email me and I will do my best to help you!
Riddle of the day 2/4/2020
Where can you find cities, towns, shops and streets but no people?
Yesterdays answer: Second place. Well done Ema R, you’ve won a homework pass!
I’m really enjoying looking at all the great work you’ve been doing at home, if you have any more pictures you’d like to send me you can email them to ms.oriordan.st.johnofgodartane@gmail.com. It doesn’t have to just be pictures of schoolwork - if you have cooked, baked, drawn or made anything and you would like to send me a photo of it, that would be great!

Monday 30th March 2020
Hello girls!
Well done to everyone that submitted guesses for Friday's riddle of the day, the answer was a fence/wall/hedge. Lots of people guessed correctly, but the first person to email me was Katie! Super work Katie, you'll get your homework pass when we get back to school. Monday's riddle is: I make two people out of one. What am I?
I'm also really proud of and impressed by the girls who have been logging on to Mangahigh and working hard, well done girls! Don't forget that RTÉ Home School Hub starts today from 11am - 12pm on RTÉ 2, but you can catch it on the RTÉ Player afterwards! There will be extra activities available on https://www.rte.ie/learn/ to be done alongside the Home School Hub programme.
Your work for this week is attached as a file below this post. I understand that doing schoolwork at home is strange, it's strange for me too! If you don't get all of this work done, that's okay, just try your best. Don't get stressed if you feel you can't do it, just move on. Your physical and mental health is the most important thing for you to take care of, so be kind to yourself! If your parents are busy at work (either inside or outside your home), you could help them out by doing some cleaning around the house, or even cooking if you are allowed to!
Don't forget to keep washing your hands, and coughing/sneezing into your elbow. It's really important to keep your distance from people from other households at the moment, so catch up with your friends online rather than in person (as long as you have permission from your parents). Be kind, be respectful and be responsible - especially when you're online!
Enjoy your week! Ms O'Riordan :)

Hello girls!
I hope you're all keeping safe and healthy during our time off school! A great way to keep your body and mind healthy is to exercise regularly. If you are able to go out for walks in the fresh air while keeping 2 metres between yourself and others, that's a lovely way to get exercise and clear your mind! If this isn't possible for you, Joe Wicks has started 30 minute P.E. classes on his YouTube channel every weekday, which you can do for free and in your own home! I'll put a link to his channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz0go1pTda8
Starting next Monday, the 30th of March, RTÉ 2 will be having virtual school from 11am to 12pm every weekday also. The episodes will be available on the RTÉ player afterwards, with worksheets online at https://www.rte.ie/learn/. This would be a super way of keeping your brain busy if we are not back to school by then.
For now, I'm going to be posting a Riddle a Day here, you can send your guesses to me by email at emer.a.oriordan@gmail.com. I will post the answer to the riddle the following day, along with the name of the first person to send me the correct answer.
Todays riddle: What has to be broken before you can use it?
I've completed the Dojo Bank and will attach it as a file here for you to see. Have a think about what you'd like to spend your points on when we're back in school!
Remember to #StayHome as much as you can, to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. This is a new experience for everyone, so it can seem scary and worrying. All we can do is our best to make sure we look after each other - the best way to work together to slow down the spread of the virus is to stay apart. I realise the days can seem very long when you're inside for most of the day, I'll attach a sample daily plan that you could follow, or adapt to suit your family.
Be kind, be responsible and be respectful.
I miss ye all, see ye soon!

Useful websites
I'm leaving a list here of websites that you can use over the next couple of weeks, for entertainment or for research. If you would like to use this time to complete a project on any topic, you can present this project when we get back to school and earn 25 Dojo points for yourself! The long awaited Dojo bank is being made as we speak, I'll post again in a couple of days so you can decide what you'd like to spend your points on when we're back!

Work for home
Hello girls!
I've attached a file with work that you can do to keep yourself busy over the next two weeks. If you find anything really tricky, skip it and come back to it when you have completed your other work. I will set work for you to complete on Mangahigh and will be checking to see who has been logging on. Ms. Gerrard and Ms. Clarke have made a list of websites you can use over the two weeks also, you can find this list on the home page of our school website.
While you are at home, I know you will all make an effort to help your parents with any chores or keeping your younger brothers and sisters entertained. Remember to keep washing your hands carefully and coughing/sneezing into your elbow so that you can keep everyone as safe and healthy as can be.
I'll see you all in two weeks!

Credit Union Quiz 2020
The 2020 Credit Union Schools Quiz took place in Parnell’s GAA club this Wednesday night, 5th of February. 8 pupils from 5th and 6th classes took part in the quiz and represented our school so well. Thank you so much to these girls for giving up their evening, as well as several lunch breaks, to prepare for and take part in the quiz. They have made us so proud. Well done girls!
Working with iPads
The school has recently purchased some new iPads, which we have been getting to grips with. So far, we have practiced our coding skills using the free website Hour of Code, and we have turned our narrative writing pieces into ebooks using the app Book Creator. We have really enjoyed using the iPads so far!
Weaving
Deirdre introduced us to weaving using wool and cardboard looms. Everyone absolutely loved learning how to weave and you can spot any of the 6th class girls out in the yard working on their pieces. We will continue working with fabric and fibre after Christmas, and may be looking for some parent volunteers to help out.
Individual printing
We used our feather prints from our collaborative printing piece to create our own individual works of art. These feathers became part of some beautiful birds, both real and imaginary! The girls have become experts at print!
Marathon Kids - The Final Mile!
Over the last 8 weeks we have been running a certain distance each day as a part of the MarathonKids programme. In total we have ran 42 kilometres; the distance of a full marathon! We went to Morton Stadium in Santry today to run the final mile with lots of other schools. The girls did an amazing job and represented the school so well. We are so proud of the hard work and commitment they have put in over the last 8 weeks, well done girls!
National Gallery of Ireland exhibition
The beautiful feather blind we created with Deirdre O’Reilly a few weeks ago has been displayed in the National Gallery today as part of the Creative Schools exhibition. Unfortunately only four people from each school could attend the exhibition so Ms.Gerrard and Deirdre accompanied Megan and Ava to the gallery today. Lucky for the rest of us, Ms.Gerrard was able to Skype us and show us the work on display. All the girls should be so proud of this incredible achievement.
Croke Park 2019
Congratulations to the Gaelic team who won the football finals in Croke Park yesterday, especially all the team members in 6th class! We are so proud of all of our girls. Cormac Costello brought the Sam Maguire cup into the school today and we were very proud to show him our cup too!
Printing feathers
Today we printed our feathers that we had created last week. We printed them on a huge white roller blind. It was amazing how something so plain could become so colourful and beautiful in such a short space of time!
Wednesday Workshop
Deirdre O'Reilly was back with us again in Room 15 this week. We continued our focus on drawing feathers, but this week we used drawing pens rather than pencils. After we had experimented a little bit with different drawing styles, we traced our favourite feather onto a piece of foam. This tracing was then cut out and we stuck it to a piece of cardboard to make it more sturdy. Next week these foam feathers will be used for printing a whole class project!
Ozobots workshop - Week 1
This week we began a three session coding programme using Ozobots. Ozobots are micro robots that read colour code through an optical sensor on their base. We learned how to give the Ozobots instructions using colour codes and sent them on different routes with these codes. We can't wait for session two!
Drawing with Deirdre
For week 3 of working with artist Deirdre O'Reilly, we focused on the medium of drawing. We experimented with different types of pencils while creating drawings of feathers. It was really interesting to see how different the results were!
Artist Wednesdays Week 2
We had Deirdre O'Reilly in with us again this week to work with us during our art time. This week we worked with paint and focused on colour mixing. We created some beautiful pieces!
Creative Wednesdays
We in Sixth Class are very lucky to have an artist coming in to work with us for the next few weeks. Today was our first day of this programme and we created lots of amazing clay works. Take a look!
